POTTY TRAINING YOUR PUPPY:

FEED YOUR PUPPY 3 TIMES EACH DAY:

(The following schedule is for puppies. Eliminate the noon meal when he/she reaches 6 months old.)

Feed the puppy food and water, watch closely for 10-15 minutes and then take him/her out to go potty and play for 30 minutes.  Puppy goes to the bathroom about every 30 min. You can offer water right before taking puppy out to potty but do NOT leave food and water out for free feeding. You can begin leaving water out freely when puppy is 5-6 months old.

DAILY SCHEDULE:

  • 6:00AM- Take puppy outside to go to the bathroom

Take him to the same spot every morning. In the beginning you’ll want to do this with puppy on a leash to train them to go in a certain area of your yard. Praise him and pet him after he goes potty by saying “good boy!” or “good potty!” (this is a trick/command he’s learning just like sit and down)

  • 7:00AM- Feed and water pup. Offer 1/3 of food in the AM, make her sit, then put food down and leave it out for 10-15 minutes. Even if food remains after 15 min, put it away. (She will figure out the schedule if you stick to it!)
  • 7:20AM- Take pup to potty area, play 20-30 minutes with puppy.
  • 7:40am- Put puppy in crate. (Puppy always stays in her crate when you cannot give her your full attention. Sometimes this is for 15 min, sometimes for 2-3 hours. Do what is best for you and your schedule. It is good do have it be random.
  • Mid morning- get puppy out of crate, walk directly to potty area. Play with puppy for 30 min. Then return puppy to crate.
  • LUNCH- 12:00PM-1:00PM Feed pup second meal and offer water. Walk puppy to potty area and play with puppy outside for a while. Go back inside and spend at least 20 minutes with puppy. Offer water, walk puppy to potty area and return to crate.
  • 6:00PM-.  Feed puppy third meal and offer water for the last time. (5 hours before bed should be their last time drinking water) in 15 minutes walk pup to potty spot. Allow puppy to play in kitchen while making dinner, play with kids etc.
  • 7:00PM- Walk puppy to potty spot. Play with puppy until she is worn out.
  • Bed Time- Walk Puppy to potty area and then puppy sleeps in crate.

The first 1-2 weeks you may need to wake up 1-2x a night for a quick potty break. Set an alarm every 3-4 hours. It is important that you’re the one to let him out of the crate not that they wimper and you let them out. Puppies need 18-20 hours a day of sleep. Its ok for them to be in the crate for random time periods throughout the day! REMEMBER: When puppy can’t be supervised they are always in the crate, and NEVER LET PUPPY OUT OF THE CRATE IF HE is whining/barking/screaming!!
