The type and frequency of grooming a goldendoodle requires depends on the type of coat it has. Goldendoodles may have one of three types of coats: wavy, curly or straight. Your puppy falls in the wavy/curly categories.
A curly/wavy coat is the most demanding type of coat and requires daily brushing. Without regular brushing, the tight ringlets that cover the pup’s body risk becoming matted.
BATHING: In addition to regular brushing, goldendoodles require bathing. Be sure to comb your dog’s hair before and after every bath and to blow dry his hair rather than letting it air dry. Unlike some breeds that require regular bathing, you should refrain from overbathing your goldendoodle. Ideally, you should only bathe your pup once or twice a month or after a messy activity, like a muddy hike or after splashing in dirty puddles at the park. If you over-bathe your dog, you risk zapping its fur of the oils that contribute to its coat’s health and this can cause itching. If you notice frequent scratching cut back on the number of baths you are giving your puppy.
Brush and comb: The pet slicker brush with curved back is the recommended brush and the metal pet comb (provided in your puppy pack) is the recommended comb.
Additionally, you should check your furry friend’s ears weekly. Because of their long coats, goldendoodles are at risk of developing ear infections. You can help to prevent an infection by cleaning your puppy’s ears with a cotton ball and recommended cleaning solution. Only wipe the outside of the ear as foreign fluids in the canal can cause pain and irreparable damage.
**Pro Tip!** Treat your dog to doggy perfume! Golden doodle hair holds scents very well, so they can smell fresh and clean long after bath time. Our favorite is “Crazy Dog Baby Powder Grooming Spray” AKA Baby Dog spray. (You can find it on Amazon).
Water sports:
Goldendoodles often love to swim but chlorine/air drying is known to matt up the coat. If your dog will be swimming regularly keep her coat cut short. Be sure to brush your dogs coat after every swimming adventure.
Trimming Your Goldendoodle’s Nails: Goldendoodles are very active dogs. As a result, their nails naturally get filed down. However, you should check your pup’s nails every month to make sure they’re at a good length.
Professional Grooming: Goldendoodles need professional grooming every 6-8 weeks. Grooming should include, cleaning ears, nail clipping, bathing and a coat trim.
